This edition of Tumpeng Tindih takes the form of an open evening by sōydivision, taking place on 7 March 2026 at Novilla. The event marks a soft launch of the second and third year of TRUSTPICTION, our long-term curatorial cycle that began in 2025 and continues through 2026–2027, supported by Basic Förderung – Visual Arts from the Senat Berlin.
At the heart of the evening is the first public introduction of &lainlainLab, a new room inside Novilla that sōydivision will inhabit as a working and residency space for the next two years. The lab is conceived as a space in between — a place for reflection and continuation, where looking back becomes a way of moving forward. This moment is also significant for us as sōydivision is about to enter its tenth year of practice. Over time, we have shifted form many times — from an artistic group to an ensemble, from a collective to a constellation. With &lainlainLab, we introduce ourselves as a constellation that remains hungry to study together, to learn from one another, and to practice collective study as an ongoing method. This takes shape through the long-term activation of ASOY Radio and the Soy & Zine Lab, which together form the core infrastructure that will stay present and active in the space over the coming two years.
Alongside this introduction, we will premiere the latest mutation of TAHANGUENTAR, an evolving artistic work by the sōydivision Ensemble, including Ariel Orah, Pedro Oliveira, and Asarela Dewi. TAHANGUENTAR emerged organically within the sōydivision constellation, beginning with Soy & Synth, an improvisational concert series rooted in empathy-based experimental music practices. From there, collaborations deepened through Jendela Sonorama, an electro-acoustic performance and lecture series, from which one thematic thread continued and evolved into TAHANGUENTAR. Originally performance-based, the work has now mutated into audiovisual installations, sonic sculptures, and an instalative zine.
Doors open at 18:00, with time to visit the exhibitions and the space. From 19:00 onwards, the evening shifts into shared moments, presentations, and gathering, leading into Tumpeng Tindih as a collective dining ritual. In Indonesian culture, tumpeng is a cone-shaped rice dish traditionally surrounded by many different dishes, symbolizing gratitude, diversity, and togetherness across Indonesia’s many regions, languages, and cultures. For this evening, we will prepare the tumpeng rice and sambal — because sambal is essential. We warmly invite those who wish to join the dining ritual to bring one small dish to contribute. It does not need to be big or elaborate; the gesture of contributing is what matters.
To respect the collective effort, we kindly ask that if you do not bring a dish, please do not join the eating part of the tumpeng ritual. Alternatively, you are welcome to make a small donation in support of the shared meal. This is not about exclusion, but about care, reciprocity, and honoring the contributions of others.
Tumpeng Tindih is a recurring format by sōydivision, held for the fourth time. The title is inspired by the Indonesian phrase tumpang tindih — meaning overlapping, layered, occupying the same space at once — and reflects the condition we are in. In recent weeks, this space has been affected by two book-burning incidents carried out by far-right actors. That intimidation now exists alongside our preparation to work here for the next two years. This edition holds both realities together: celebration and pressure, beginning and persistence. We gather anyway.

Diese Ausgabe von Tumpeng Tindih findet als Open Evening von sōydivision statt und wird am 7. März 2026 bei Novilla ausgerichtet. Die Veranstaltung markiert den Soft Launch des zweiten und dritten Jahres von TRUSTPICTION, unserem langfristigen kuratorischen Zyklus, der 2025 begann und sich über 2026–2027 fortsetzt. Das Projekt wird durch die Basisförderung Bildende Kunst des Berliner Senats unterstützt.
Im Zentrum des Abends steht die erste öffentliche Einführung von &lainlainLab, einem neuen Raum innerhalb von Novilla, den sōydivision in den kommenden zwei Jahren als Arbeits- und Residenzraum nutzen wird. Das Lab ist als ein Raum dazwischen gedacht — ein Ort der Reflexion und der Weiterführung, an dem das Zurückblicken zu einer Methode wird, um voranzugehen. Dieser Moment ist für uns auch deshalb bedeutsam, weil sōydivision kurz davorsteht, in sein zehntes Jahr der Praxis einzutreten. Im Laufe der Zeit haben wir unsere Form immer wieder verändert — von einer künstlerischen Gruppe zu einem Ensemble, von einem Kollektiv zu einer Konstellation. Mit &lainlainLab verstehen wir uns als eine Konstellation, die weiterhin hungrig danach ist, gemeinsam zu lernen, voneinander zu lernen und kollektives Studieren als fortlaufende Praxis zu begreifen. Konkret wird dies durch die langfristige Aktivierung von ASOY Radio und dem Soy & Zine Lab, die gemeinsam die zentrale Infrastruktur bilden, die in den nächsten zwei Jahren kontinuierlich im Raum präsent sein wird.
Parallel dazu präsentieren wir die neueste Mutation von TAHANGUENTAR, einer fortlaufenden künstlerischen Arbeit des sōydivision Ensembles mit Ariel Orah, Pedro Oliveira und Asarela Dewi. TAHANGUENTAR entstand organisch innerhalb der sōydivision-Konstellation und nahm seinen Anfang in Soy & Synth, einer improvisatorischen Konzertreihe, die auf empathiebasierten experimentellen Musikpraktiken beruht. Daraus vertieften sich die Kollaborationen in Jendela Sonorama, einer elektroakustischen Performance- und Lecture-Serie, aus der sich ein thematischer Strang weiterentwickelte und schließlich zu TAHANGUENTAR wurde. Ursprünglich als Performance angelegt, hat sich die Arbeit inzwischen zu audiovisuellen Installationen, klanglichen Skulpturen und einem installativen Zine weiterentwickelt.
Die Türen öffnen um 18:00 Uhr, mit Zeit, die Ausstellungen und den Raum zu besuchen. Ab 19:00 Uhr geht der Abend in gemeinsame Momente, Präsentationen und Begegnungen über und mündet in Tumpeng Tindih als kollektives Essritual. In der indonesischen Kultur ist Tumpeng ein kegelförmiges Reisgericht, das traditionell von vielen verschiedenen Speisen umgeben ist und Dankbarkeit, Vielfalt und Zusammengehörigkeit über die zahlreichen Regionen, Sprachen und Kulturen Indonesiens hinweg symbolisiert. Für diesen Abend bereiten wir den Tumpeng-Reis und Sambal vor — denn Sambal ist essenziell. Wir laden alle, die am gemeinsamen Essen teilnehmen möchten, herzlich ein, eine kleine Speise beizusteuern. Sie muss nicht groß oder aufwendig sein; entscheidend ist die Geste des Beitragens.
Aus Respekt vor der kollektiven Anstrengung bitten wir darum, dass Personen, die nichts mitbringen, nicht am Essen des Tumpeng-Rituals teilnehmen. Alternativ besteht die Möglichkeit, eine kleine Spende zur Unterstützung des gemeinsamen Essens zu leisten. Dabei geht es nicht um Ausschluss, sondern um Fürsorge, Gegenseitigkeit und die Wertschätzung der Beiträge anderer.
Tumpeng Tindih ist ein wiederkehrendes Format von sōydivision und findet nun zum vierten Mal statt. Der Titel ist inspiriert von dem indonesischen Ausdruck tumpang tindih — was überlappend, geschichtet, gleichzeitig denselben Raum einnehmend bedeutet — und beschreibt den Zustand, in dem wir uns befinden. In den vergangenen Wochen war dieser Ort von zwei Bücherverbrennungs-Vorfällen betroffen, die von Akteur*innen aus dem rechtsextremen Spektrum verübt wurden. Diese Einschüchterung steht nun neben unseren Vorbereitungen, hier in den kommenden zwei Jahren zu arbeiten. Diese Ausgabe hält beide Realitäten zusammen: Feier und Druck, Anfang und Beharrlichkeit. Wir kommen trotzdem zusammen.
